The Phoenix is one of the greatest multi-genre venues to be found in London. While a cursory glance at the outside points to nothing more than a lively west end boozer, a trip downstairs to the basement is your ticket to a whole host of superb entertainment. Live bands, world class stand up comedy and of course….a little bit of soul. Low ceilings, a perfectly sized dancefloor and great beers are all hallmarks of the venue which is easily one of London’s best kept secrets.
There are two great soul nights that run at The Phoenix and both are well established fixtures on the scene. The first is our very own Soul of the 60s. Established in 2007 it is a non-stop danceathon featuring the biggest tracks of the era….from Stevie Wonder to Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye to James Brown. Every song is a classic and over 5 hours the room turns from a London watering hole to a full-blown New York soul basement. It is easily one of the best soul nights in town….and we’re not just saying that because we run it. Soul of the 60s takes place on the 3rd Friday of every month from 9pm til 2am.
The other soul night here is Great Big Kiss which takes place on the second Saturday of each month. While at a glance the two nights might seem the same, GBK has a greater focus on Northern Soul and girl groups….with tracks being played with great reverence from the original vinyls. The night runs from 9pm til 3am. Details for GBK can be found here.
